Newspaper Ad for the Collegio

Our class was given a budget of $197 to create an ad for the school newspaper, The Collegio. It was understood our ad would be in black and white only because we were told it is an extra $200 to run your ad in color. So I used this formula to determine the cost for my ad.
   3 columns x 6 inches = 34.5 column inches, so,  34.5 column inches x $4 per column inch = $138 total

From there I needed to determine the size of my InDesign file.
    If 3 columns = 5.75" and my newspaper dimensions are 3 x 6, then my InDesign file = 5.75" s 6"

Target Audience:
For this project I have more of a broad audience because my product can appeal to so many people and is being placed in a medium that is viewed by people of all age ranges and demographics. I have selected three broad target audiences to whom I would like to reach through this ad.
Non-Alumni,  Pittsburg residents who go to the Pitt State football games.
Alumni who have families and friends that attend the football games.
-Both with an independent annual income of at least $35,000
          Students of Pitt State

Call to Action:
To check out their website and come eat their food on November 12th at the Pitt State home football game.

Bitmap Image:
It was suggested by our instructor to use a bitmap image in our newspaper ad. It was challenging to decide which element to make the hand drawn piece with my ad due to the fact that I am representing an existing company and they already have their image set with their design. I decided to use most of their original work and then place in a drawing of a taco to create the visual element of the food that will be served. This of course is not a replica of their food, but begins the thought process for the reader. I actually printed a picture from the internet and then traced it with a black sharpy adding areas of detail as I thought necessary. Then I used the copy machine and increased its size by 200%, then used a scanner and scanned the larger image into the computer at a resolution of 800 to ensure the quality of the image when scaled later. We used a formula which told us that our bitmap images needed to be scanned with at least 680 resolution to ensure smooth lines and fine detail.
(line screen is 85 so,   85 x 8 = 680) Once I opened my bitmap in photoshop I then saved it as an EPS file and check marked the transparent whites box so I was just saving the image not the white background.

Emotions can be Created through Color and Typography

Universal Studio's Mazes
inspired by Universal Pictures' thrillers
Over Fall Break I went to Universal Studio's Hollywood and ventured through their Halloween Horror Nights Mazes. Before visiting the park I viewed the information on their website and began to feel some anxiety just when viewing the logos and images associated with them. The incorporation of  red into each logo as well as in other areas of life that cause fear and call for alertness leads me to believe that it is commonly used to create a feeling of fear, danger, extreme awareness. Each logo is different in its own way, but each provides a little insight to the atmosphere experienced in that maze.

Variable Data Direct Mail Piece

WHAT: Cruises to Jamaica during the Winter months of the Midwest.

WHO(target audience):
1. Working Women
        age 30-35
        married
with at least one child between the ages of 3-10
has a combined net annual income with husband of at least $120,000
        enjoys exploring new places
lives in an area where winter brings snow
who's immediate family members are capable of travel for many days at a time

2. Retired Women
       age 55-85
enjoy interacting with people they may not know
has disposable income through 401K and/or Social Security and/or Savings
       who enjoys exploring new places
lives in an area where winter brings snow
are capable of traveling for many days at a time

I feel these two groups are my ideal target audience. Women with younger children as well as retired women tend to enjoy travelling, but don't want the hassell of driving, finding hotels, eatting out, and planning activities along the way. Cruise ships offer an array of activities suitable for all age ranges and interests creating a desirable environment for anyone and they do the "driving".They also provide food at all times of the day allowing passengers to enjoy the day at their leasure instead of following a strict plan.

Logo and Design:
Due to the fact that almost all the images of true cruise ships on the internet have copyrights. I chose to create a fake company which required me to make a logo for the company I would be representing, Wanderer Cruise Lines located in Huntingbeach, CA. I then selected my image, applied color to it, built text that fit my target audiences, and placed them accordingly.

Instructions and Excel Sheet:
Along with my 4 page InDesign file and PDF I also submitted a Word Doc with intructions explaining which words and images should be present on which page as well as an Excel Spreadsheet with the names, addresses, and applicable personal information of each person who would recieve my direct mail piece.
