Final Project

For my final project I was instructed that I must create something that is more intricate than a flat piece of paper. My first consideration was a leave behind portfolio, but I was struggling with the decision of which pieces to include, so I opted to make a visual ordering flip board for Sweet Designs Cakery. I have been interning with this company over this semester and have been discussing the difficulty the manager has explaining all the options and decisions people have to make when ordering a custom cake. For this assignment was goal was to make the ordering process easier, faster, and more understandable for the client. My target audience is visual thinkers who want to order cakes at Sweet Designs Cakery.

First here are my thumbs while brainstorming ideas for my final project. . .

Here is my Rough . . .

Folding Dummy outside . . .

My Project Design  . . .
(8.5" x 11" menu board in landscape orientation)

(8.5" x 11" fold out menu) which is placed in the pocket when not viewing.

With 8 flipping categories and one fold out menu this project created some challenges, but wasn't impossible as long as I created a folding dummy, followed the current menu, and was able to visualize the layout. Mrs. Bensen has requested we state the cost to print 1000 of these, but it seems that Sweet Designs Cakery would only need to print 1 or possibly 2 every year at most.
To print 1 at printing services cost _$ 19.31.00___.
To print 1000 would cost _$_19,310.00 _.  WOW!!! Hopefully we won't need that many. . . EVER!

Let's Recap

This semester seems to have flown by. I'm just getting the hang of things and it's time to call it quits...with the class anyway. When I enrolled in this class I was a little turned off by the fact that it was a writing to learn course, but I am now glad to have created my blog and will be using it as a tool to show my work and thought process to future employee.

I have a learned a lot during the course of this class. Before, I struggled with understanding even the basic file types and their compatability and now have a much better grasp on what each file type is for, when to use them, and which are compatible with specific software. Thanks to the gradesheets, that we all cringed when filling out, I better understand the basic requirements to ensure my file will be sent successfully to a rip. I think preflighting a file is like anything you do, the more you do it the better you get and the more shortcuts you will find to make the process easier.

Each assignment gave me a chance to further understand the preperation involved in creating files that are sure to pass the rip in order to be printed in their final phase. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot from Christel as well from my other class mates. Now that I'm in the habit of preflighting my files I hope to make that a life long practice.

Full Page Magazine Ad

I have decided to create a full page ad for the nook by Barnes & Noble in the magazine REALsimple.  My idea was to create a correlation between something that has many different pieces that we're used to seeing together and the many items that are placed together in the nook. I incorporated a custom Mac Tag that directs the readers to the comparison page of Barnes & Noble's website.

REAL Simple Magazine Specifications

Margin = T&B .75” | L&R .75”

Trim Size= 9” x 10.875”

Maximum Size for a single spread, including all marks and color bars and agency info       = 11” wide x 17” high

Images must be SWOP TR 05 Compliant and saved as TIFF or EPS

File Format Accepted = PDF/ x-1a, submit via Time Inc. Ad Portal

Color Mode: CMYK or Grayscale

Line Screen: 133 lpi /min. resolution 200 dpi

Newspaper Ad for the Collegio

Our class was given a budget of $197 to create an ad for the school newspaper, The Collegio. It was understood our ad would be in black and white only because we were told it is an extra $200 to run your ad in color. So I used this formula to determine the cost for my ad.
   3 columns x 6 inches = 34.5 column inches, so,  34.5 column inches x $4 per column inch = $138 total

From there I needed to determine the size of my InDesign file.
    If 3 columns = 5.75" and my newspaper dimensions are 3 x 6, then my InDesign file = 5.75" s 6"

Target Audience:
For this project I have more of a broad audience because my product can appeal to so many people and is being placed in a medium that is viewed by people of all age ranges and demographics. I have selected three broad target audiences to whom I would like to reach through this ad.
Non-Alumni,  Pittsburg residents who go to the Pitt State football games.
Alumni who have families and friends that attend the football games.
-Both with an independent annual income of at least $35,000
          Students of Pitt State

Call to Action:
To check out their website and come eat their food on November 12th at the Pitt State home football game.

Bitmap Image:
It was suggested by our instructor to use a bitmap image in our newspaper ad. It was challenging to decide which element to make the hand drawn piece with my ad due to the fact that I am representing an existing company and they already have their image set with their design. I decided to use most of their original work and then place in a drawing of a taco to create the visual element of the food that will be served. This of course is not a replica of their food, but begins the thought process for the reader. I actually printed a picture from the internet and then traced it with a black sharpy adding areas of detail as I thought necessary. Then I used the copy machine and increased its size by 200%, then used a scanner and scanned the larger image into the computer at a resolution of 800 to ensure the quality of the image when scaled later. We used a formula which told us that our bitmap images needed to be scanned with at least 680 resolution to ensure smooth lines and fine detail.
(line screen is 85 so,   85 x 8 = 680) Once I opened my bitmap in photoshop I then saved it as an EPS file and check marked the transparent whites box so I was just saving the image not the white background.

Emotions can be Created through Color and Typography

Universal Studio's Mazes
inspired by Universal Pictures' thrillers
Over Fall Break I went to Universal Studio's Hollywood and ventured through their Halloween Horror Nights Mazes. Before visiting the park I viewed the information on their website and began to feel some anxiety just when viewing the logos and images associated with them. The incorporation of  red into each logo as well as in other areas of life that cause fear and call for alertness leads me to believe that it is commonly used to create a feeling of fear, danger, extreme awareness. Each logo is different in its own way, but each provides a little insight to the atmosphere experienced in that maze.
